Now more than 20 years after its launch, the X5 has continued to get better with nearly every passing moment. It’s always had a distinctly more ‘sporty’ feel than other SUVs in the same segment, yet over time the German auto-maker has continually developed the X5 into a more tech-savvy and luxuriously comfortable unit. Nowadays, standard kit starts with sat-nav, wireless phone charging, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with DAB+, adaptive LED headlights, heads-up display, keyless operation, dual-zone climate control, heated front sport seats, power tailgate and much more, especially when you factor in advanced safety aids. Making your way up from the likes of the entry-level models in the X Series to the X5 is almost like chalk and cheese, and that is no disservice to those other suave models. It is a sign of how good the X5 truly is, what with all the charming materials used across every corner of the cabin, the broader presence of technology, extra space throughout, and what is a dynamic line-up of engines. The four-cylinder turbo-diesel xDrive25d offers 170kW and 450Nm, while the xDrive30d relies on a turbo-diesel V6 for 195kW of power and 620Nm. Personally, we love the xDrive40i, which pumps out 250kW and fits the bill for a heavy-hitter. Delightfully classy, the X5 is a torquey car that balances performance, agility, class and amenity.
