Given the BMW X2 is mechanically identical to its larger brother in the X1, that means most of the variants across the X2 range are front-wheel drive. However, there are two variants in the M35i and M35i Pure that feature all-wheel drive, which is much more useful for those seeking a versatile unit that can also cope well in certain off-road driving conditions. This is not to be mistaken with a 'full' 4x4 set-up, so keep that in mind if you are hoping to drive into the depths of Australia's outback.
Don't let the numbers fool you here, the X2 is actually smaller than the X1 due to its body type, which is a sporty crossover, and not your traditional SUV. Not only is the X2 around 8 centimetres shorter than the X1, but it also sits lower, by approximately 7 centimetres. Given its sleek profile, the X2 also has less headroom in the rear, while the upright stance of the X1 ensures that it is taller in the back and also has more space for luggage in the boot.
Yes, the BMW X2 is considered an SUV, albeit not your traditional SUV. Instead, it is considered a crossover, sporting a lower and more sleek profile, with an appearance that some would consider more aggressive, blending sport, flair and luxury. It is effectively a blend between an SUV and a coupe.

The BMW naming strategy isn’t always easy to follow. Odd-numbered cars are considered mainstream, and even numbers are targeted at lifestyled vehicles. So, a 3 Series or X1 is the bread and butter, but an X2 or 4 Series is the jam on top. Apparently, more practical (and now discontinued in Aus) cars like the 2 Series Active Tourer and 6 Series GT also denote...
View ReviewIt’s competent, it’s fast enough and it even handles pretty well, but what the hell is the BMW X2 M35i? I don’t know. It’s still a quality effort by BMW M, perhaps even more than usual, given the wishy-washy nature of the donor machine, with a reasonable ride, a strong, torquey motor and plenty of bite from the all-wheel drive. Quick compact coupe crossover...
View ReviewAs is often the case, BMW has come late to a really good party. One imagines there was some chatter about making a quick X1 but that would have been an answer to a question few people thought to ask. It's not a racy-looking machine and perhaps its more prosaic aims as a compact SUV ruled it out. Or the hangover from the weird first generation. The X2's Paris...
View ReviewThe BMW X2 M35i sits atop the X2 line-up. While from the outside it presents as a mini-SUV, this car is more than meets the eye. At its heart lies a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, and it is built on a transverse front-wheel-drive platform – going against BMW’s M institution. The X2 was the first M-Performance model to boast a four-cylinder turb...
View ReviewForget big sedans and performance cars, luxury brands in Australia are all about SUVs. Combined, the X SUV range accounts for more than 55 per cent of BMW sales in Australia in 2021, driven by demand for the large X5, mid-sized X3, and compact X1. Although it combines the coveted BMW badge with a fashionable small SUV body, the X2 remains a niche seller in A...
View ReviewWhen it comes to creating niche vehicle segments within already niche segments, BMW is somewhat of an authority. Its X6 arguably kick-started the coupe SUV craze at the large end of the spectrum, which was followed by a version in each size category. Its range of Gran Coupe models, meanwhile, effectively does the reverse by turning coupe-profiled vehicles in...
