The all-new 2022 BMW i4 represents the first release of this next-generation electric sedan, and boy has the wait been worth it. The first high-performance EV from the German auto-maker, the i4 goes toe-to-toe with Tesla in a segment that is quickly beginning to resonate with new car buyers across the world. Boasting all-new architecture that allows the i4’s slim-line 83.9kWh lithium-ion battery to sit under the floor and provide a low centre of gravity, this range offers comparable dimensions to the 3 Series, albeit vastly superior dynamics. At the top of the range the M50 variant boasts 510km of driving range, although you can nearly hit 600km with the eDrive 40 spec. The inclusion of fast-charging adds high versatility and practicality, with up to 140km of driving range available from just 10 minutes of charging. Mechanically, rear air suspension, a five-link rear axle and Macpherson struts up front make for impeccable ride comfort and handling, with the i4 feeling especially planted on the road. The M50 is AWD and generates 400kW of power and 795Nm of torque from dual electric motors, while the eDrive 40 uses a single electric motor to send a towering 250kW and 430Nm to the rear wheels. With sleek, futuristic looks on the outside, plus a statesmanlike cabin decked out with plenty of tech and sustainably-sourced materials, the i4 range makes a real statement.
