After the Z4 was given a major upgrade just a couple years ago, the changes are more subtle this time around with the MY21 edition of the Z4, albeit BMW has made the decision to cut the six-speed manual option from its prodigious roadster. The eight-speed auto remains a popular choice, with the steptronic sport transmission being a slick unit that pulls all the strings with a sense of precision that’s second to none. Of course, a roadster is only as fun to drive as the engine you put in it, but thankfully, the Z4 range is available with engines that range in size from 2.0-litres and four-cylinders, to 3.0-litre turbocharged V6’ers. Take the Z4 to the road and with its light steering and responsive handling, there is a sense of adrenaline that is hard to put into words. This is the sort of car that will take you back in time, to a happy place, and certainly come to appreciate everything you’ve accomplished to reach this moment. Drawing on the nous of BMW’s experienced team, as well as the engineering know-how of Toyota’s developers, who have co-developed the composed RWD platform for this car, everything feels like a breath of fresh air. Add in a wealth of soft and exquisite materials, head-turning looks, plenty of safety gear, and a healthy serving of tech inclusions, the Z4 is a car we’re lucky to have. Don’t miss your chance to own this automotive icon.

The market for two-seat drop-top fun machines is a fickle one. It's a segment driven by fashion, and one that’s not universally popular (or suitable) around the world. If nothing else, BMW deserves a raucous high-five for bringing the current Z4 to life, even if the cooperation with Toyota for the reborn Supra was instrumental to this. It does seem a little...

Let’s get it out of the way right up front. Yes, the BMW Z4 provides the building blocks that underpin the Toyota Supra. But to say the two are the same to look at or even drive is patently ridiculous. Toyota arrived at the Z4 party way later than it chooses to admit. So, what you’re looking at here is 100 per cent Bavarian at heart. Which is good as BMW has...

I remember the first Bond film I ever watched. I was about eight or nine years old, and it was GoldenEye on VHS. In that film, Pierce Brosnan drove a BMW Z3 convertible, which obviously oozed cool. I didn’t know at the time that it was just a little bit weird that he wasn’t driving an Aston Martin for the entire duration of the movie, but it didn’t matter, t...

The first BMW I ever drove was a convertible 3 Series. We’re talking late ’90s, and it was a Lapis Blue, or maybe Baltic Blue, E30 323i cab’ that belonged to a girlfriend of a girlfriend. The drive, from somewhere in Brighton to somewhere in Hawthorn, on a warm summer’s night, with the top down and music up, was perfect. Make no mistake, to me this was a cru...

It’s fair to say that when the technically related BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra sports cars were resurrected in 2018-2019, the long-awaited and hugely anticipated revival of the iconic Japanese nameplate overshadowed that of the German and its two-year sabbatical.  The cooperative gestation of the pair is both fascinating and well-documented, but the result lost...

Frustratingly, things don’t always go to plan. If they did, we wouldn’t have the all-new BMW Z4 parked next to a Porsche 718 Cayman. And it also wouldn’t be endowed with the meagre 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo. It is half-a-litre short on capacity and sans the essential topless ability we asked for when trying to secure a Boxster S for this comparison. Befo...
