The Land Rover Defender has a somewhat checkered history in the US, where yes, once upon a time it was illegal to import this unit. This was due to the fact that newer models of the Defender were withdrawn from sale in the US due to crash safety and emissions regulations. In fact, in the US, they are still restricted in California due to emissions, albeit some companies can make them 'roadworthy'. Fortunately, Australian new car buyers have no such issue to worry about, and the Defender has become one of the most-popular adventure SUVs going around.
With a number of different variants and trim options available for the new Land Rover Defender, new car buyers are absolutely spoilt for choice. If you're looking for the most accessible model within the Defender line-up, then turn your attention to the 221kW 2.0-litre 90 P300 Standard, which has a Suggested Retail Price of $78,480 plus on-road costs. On the other hand, if budget is no constraint and you want to go all out, why not have a look at the 386kW 5.0-litre V8-powered Defender 110 P525, which is priced at $220,530 before on-road costs.
Although a Land Rover Defender is more likely to hold its price in the future due to demand, as well as their versatility, resilience and status, we would always caution new car buyers who view a car as a potential investment. The reality is, very few cars go on to become an investment that appreciates in value over time, and that is typically restricted to collector cars or those produced in very small volumes. With that in mind, a Land Rover Defender could be a great investment of your time, rewarding you handsomely with plenty of excellent times.
