BMW 2 Series
After much anticipation, the new second-generation BMW 2 Series has landed down under, and this MY21 iteration brings out the big guns. In what is good news for buyers eying a true competitor to the Audi Quattro range, all-wheel-drive makes an appearance in the 2 Series line-up for the first time, with the M240i being the lucky recipient. Other variants in the 2 Series stay true to rear-wheel drive, which means you certainly have your options. At the top of the range the M240i gets a barnstorming 3.0-litre turbo V6 that puts out 275kW, and mated to a slick eight-speed auto you can go from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.3 seconds. It is the pick of the bunch compared with the alternative 180kW turbo four-cylinder and 1.5-litre turbo three-cylinder, but those engines are no slouches either. One of the more noticeable improvements across the entire 2021 2 Series range is handling and steering, with BMW improving the stiffness of the platform body for better stability and responsiveness through corners. Borrowing a number of other features from its bigger brother in the 4 Series, including advanced safety aids, as well as more space and a bold new look, you’re the real winner here, so make it count.

What is a BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe? Glad you asked, because there are a few different valid answers from different viewpoints. It’s a four-door, but it’s not technically a derivative of the existing two-door rear-driven 2 Series coupe. And it's not anything like the old 2 Series Active Tourer mini people mover. No, it’s essentially the freshly re-imagined 1 S...

There’s no doubt the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe encroaches deeper into the German luxury brand’s heartland than any of its previous front-wheel drive offerings. The X1? Well that’s an SUV. The 2 Series Active Tourer? People-mover. Nuff said. Even the new 1 Series hatch kinda makes sense. A small car with limited space but at least the propshaft no longer ge...

There’s occasional wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth over the question of whether a four-door car can be called a coupe. Rover set tongues wagging close to 60 years ago with its P5 Coupe; to all intents and purposes a sedan with a lower, slightly swoopier roofline. But in the 21st century, BMW has wiped the conversation aside and gone four-door coupe m...

The mid-life updated BMW 2 Series range has arrived in Australia, headlined by the hotted-up M240i and a revised mid-range 230i, both of which we drove at this week's launch. Pitched as a slightly softer alternative to the red-hot M2 track star, the M240i replaces the M235i, and sports a number of updates to make it more desirable. Headlining this is a rewor...

The earliest description of a coupe can be found in online version Merriam-Webster dictionary. It simply says “a four-wheeled closed horse-drawn carriage for two persons inside with an outside seat for the driver”. Which begs the question, how did we get to the point of classifying a four-door sedan with a sloped roof as a coupe? It still confuses me, more t...
