PMC Says... 8.7 / 10

BMW M5 It might be more than 30 years since the BMW M5 was first unveiled to motoring crowds, but the formula has largely remained constant. A rear-wheel drive with resolve, intensity and vigour, not to mention charming athleticism. However, the German car maker has crafted a new experience out of the executive sedan, with the 2019 model incorporating just one variant (Competition), which runs as an all-wheel drive with on-command RWD. You might be wondering, why the dramatic change? Truth be told, after driving it you might instead be asking what took so long? Sure, purists may prefer last year’s RWD variants, but this latest model out of the sixth generation stable features outstanding drive characteristics behind pure engineering marvel and daring personality. The 2019 BMW M5 sports a thunderous 4.4L V8 twin-turbo with 441kW and 750Nm, offering greater room in the top end to hear it sing. As controversial as it may be, the AWD, combined with a lower body weight, helps push the sedan to even greater heights of acceleration. As far as gear shifts and traction, the M5 is undaunted at the prospect of being pushed to its limits. Internal electronics, design, space and comfort hit every note, leaving you in an unadulterated state of bliss and extravagance.

BMW M5 Review

Restraint. You’d think there mightn’t be much of it in a 1.9-tonne BMW M5 that plies 441kW/750Nm of fire and brimstone at all fours to enable 0–100km/h acceleration in just 3.4 seconds. And that's the regular version. So it’s fair to presume there's even less restraint on show once you crank up the heat to 460kW and stick a Competition badge on the boot lid,...

Of the minor criticisms you might have levelled at the current generation BMW M5, a dearth of horsepower has never been a shortcoming. Arriving in Australia only seven months ago, the F90-generation M5 sported the sort of chest-thumping, laugh-inducing go-forward as a stein-swigging German at Octoberfest. In all, 441kW and 750Nm – enough to launch the 2.0-to...

Remember back when people were saying the BMW M5 would lose a little something by shifting from its traditional rear-wheel drive set-up to all-wheel drive? It would drain a little sparkle, maybe. Or some excitement. It would become more predictable, more placid - hell, even boring. But hindsight is always 20/20, and we know now that switching to AWD has done...

“This is the fastest BMW M car ever built.” So goes the spiel at the local launch of the sixth-generation 2018 BMW M5. What’s that, I hear you say? An understated four-door sedan the fastest BMW M ever? How can that be? It doesn’t even look that fast? And it’s true. It doesn’t. Where its rivals – heck, where even its own M Division siblings – add plenty of e...

I remember the time I drove an F10 BMW M5 in the wet. This was a car that somehow felt offended to have you driving it and did everything it could, mostly by way of its power delivery, to scare you from ever sitting in the driver’s seat ever again. In 30 Jahre spec, the two rear-driven wheels struggled to transmit the full 441kW to the tarmac and in damp con...

One quick click and I was put in touch with the dealership sales manager who provided excellent service. No need to talk to sales people who are not the decision makers in the dealership.
