The G6E is a higher-spec model compared with the G6. It was the replacement for the Fairmont, and not only did it include the features you would find in the G6, but it also included premium features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, Bluetooth mobile phone integration, reversing camera, additional airbags, an 8-way power adjustable driver's seat, and a ZF six-speed automatic transmission. There was also a turbo version, the G6E Turbo, which had an inline six-cylinder turbo engine found in the XR6 Turbo.
The term XR, which first started to appear on a regular basis on the Falcon in the early 1990s, was used almost exclusively on Ford's high-performance range across Australia. While many are led to believe that the XR stands for 'Experimental Research', the terminology used by Ford Europe, there is evidence to suggest that the designation was a tribute to the first V8 Falcon, the XR Falcon released in 1966.
Ford finally ceased manufacturing the Falcon in 2016 after a 55-year history and nearly half a million sales across the country. The decision was brought about by the high costs associated with local car production and a competitive marketplace, both which prompted Ford to hang up the boots. In addition, the availability of the Mondeo as a replacement that could be imported from abroad allowed the company to phase out the Falcon.
