When Ford put an end to the days of the Falcon, it rolled out its successor in the Mondeo. That moment also sparked the transformation to an import-driven line-up, with the Mondeo brought in from abroad to fill the gaping hole in the company's line-up in terms of mid-to-large sized sedans. More recently, however, Ford announced the Mondeo itself would be phased out from 2022, with a high-riding medium-sized crossover tipped to replace it, dubbed the Evos.
The last of the Ford Falcons rolled off the production line back in 2016, which coincided with Ford's decision to cease local manufacturing operations. So if you're still looking for a Falcon, unfortunately the second-hand market is your only bet.
First signalled years in advance, Ford finally put an end to production of the Falcon in 2016 after a 55-year history and nearly half a million sales across the country. The decision was brought about by the high costs associated with local car production and a competitive marketplace, both which prompted Ford to hang up the boots. In addition, the availability of the Mondeo as a replacement that could be imported from abroad allowed the company to phase out the Falcon.
The last Ford Falcon has rolled down the Broadmeadows production line. But are we sad to see it go?
View ReviewFord Falcon XR6 Sprint Australia's Best Driver's Car Ford's Falcon XR6 Sprint was a late entry in the 2016 Australia's Best Driver's Car, but on paper it showed a lot of promise. A monumental 325kW/576Nm turbo six – with as much as 650Nm available on overboost – an even sportier suspension with asymmetric Pirelli P-Zero front and rear tyres, Brembo brakes an...
View ReviewEwan Kennedy reviews the 2002, 2004, 2008, 2011 and 2015 Ford Falcon as a used buy. In October 2016 the last Ford Falcon left the assemble line, not long after its 56th birthday in Australia. What does this mean on the used-car scene for the period being examined here, 2002 - 2016? At this stage the answer is we simply don't know although speculation suggest...
View ReviewSo, this is goodbye. The Ford Falcon – an Australian icon with a history dating back over 56 years – is no more. With Ford’s Australian manufacturing running from Thursday August 20 in 1959 to its conclusion on Friday October 7 of this year, the Falcon nameplate - one of the longest running badges in the world - has also had its day. The last ever Aussie-mad...
View ReviewAlfa Romeo has been hard at work refining the Giulia. The engineers in Turin have updated the infotainment, interior trim, and driver assists to make its beautiful sports sedan a better rival for its German foes – and they’ve done a pretty good job of it. But the more mundane, mainstream Giulia isn’t what the red-blooded Alfisti want to know about. They want...
View ReviewTHE Ford Falcon XR6 Sprint and XR8 Sprint are the final performance production models of Ford Australia’s family sedan, marking the end of 56 years of continuous local production. The limited-edition $54,990 Falcon Sprint XR6 may not be the fan favourite (the V8 wins the popularity contest) but maybe real Ford drivers will want the XR6. It’s lighter, ultima...
