Ford Australia is still selling the Focus as it sources its vehicles from Ford Europe. The company has, however, streamlined its range, with the wagon body type now retired from the Ford Focus range. It is a different story over in the United States, where the Ford is no longer being produced or sold in that market due to a lack of consumer demand and interest.
The current Ford Focus is likely to be the last petrol-powered model before the prospect of a hybrid or electric Ford Focus becomes a reality in a few years. Ford of Europe has outlined its plans to transition to these environmentally-friendly options by 2026, and then pure electric by 2030, which would have ramifications for the models sold down under. As such, this current generation may well be the last before a more comprehensive change follows suit in the form of an all-new Focus, but in the meantime, there are typically modest changes from year to year as part of general mid-cycle upgrades.
Earlier models of the Ford Focus, particularly from 2014, were associated with transmission problems, including jerking and hesitation between gear shifts. Although the frequency of these issues have decreased considerably in the latest models of the Ford Focus, there are still isolated issues as far as the transmission shuddering or the like. It may be something to keep in mind if you have your eyes set on a Ford Focus, but also take confidence in the fact that it is far less likely you'll encounter this issue in a new Focus compared with one from some years ago.

Australia punches above its weight when it comes to performance cars. We have among the highest per-capita sales of AMG Mercedes, M Power BMWs, and RS and GT Porsches in the world. It’s the same with hot hatches. While small cars have been overtaken by SUVs, pint-size vehicles with plenty of performance have increased in popularity. The figures sound small –...
View ReviewPriced at $44,690, the new Ford Focus ST is $6400 more expensive than its $38,990 predecessor. But like an amateur wrestler promoted to the WWE pro-wrestling circuit, the Focus ST has gained access to unlimited anabolic steroids and it's now rippling with the power of former pro-wrestler Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Most people will buy this car because it's g...
View ReviewThe Ford Focus ST is a hot hatch, but just how spicy is it? Well, if it was a curry it would have two little, red chillies next to its name on the menu. Listed directly below would be the Focus RS accompanied by three chillies, but there’d be a line drawn through it with a marker pen because sadly Ford doesn’t serve that any more. So, is the Ford Focus ST ho...
View ReviewI know, we say it just about every time we drive one, but the Ford Focus has to be one of the most underappreciated cars in Australia. Despite the recent SUV and ute boom, small cars continue to sell strongly Down Under, with the segment dominated by the Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3 and Hyundai i30 – generally in that order, too. The Focus, meanwhile, is almost o...
View ReviewHot hatches have gone from hotted-up versions of regular hatches to quite sophisticated pieces of machinery. For a long time, they were also a manual-only zone – but times have changed. Buyers now want a hot hatch they can drive to work daily, which means switching out the traditional manual for an automatic. We’ve already reviewed the manual Ford Focus ST (...
View ReviewWe would not normally begin a review of the latest hot hatchback with a reference to Ferrari, but bear with us. When Ferrari launches a new car, journalists are ritually subjected to a tableaux of complicated graphs and diagrams. It’s dry but oddly compelling, and reasonable because its chassis electronics have become bewilderingly complex works of art and F...
