The A180 is a great entry-level model to access the Mercedes-Benz stable, offering a wealth of features and a strong, capable showing on the road where things truly matter. Like just about every other car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz has adopted a naming convention to categorise its line-up of vehicles. The A180 draws its name from this convention, with the 'A' signifying that this model is part of the brand's A-Class range, which consists of subcompact executive hatchbacks and sedans. Contrary to what you might believe, the reference to '180' does not have any relationship with engine displacement, power ratings or the like. Instead, it simply refers to the entry-level position in the model range, with others like A200, A250, A35 and A45 following higher up the chain.
The Mercedes-Benz A180 is available with a punchy four-cylinder 1.3-litre petrol turbo motor. Not only is it sprightly and a joy to hear, but it also boasts an impressive level of efficiency thanks to the eco stop-start functionality. That may sound like an enticing prospect, and that’s because it is. Despite being an entry-level model, the A180 comes with an admirable host of equipment and specifications. It is led by a 4-cylinder turbocharged 1.3L motor and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The pairing pumps out 100kW at a lowly consumption of just 5.7L/100km, but even more commendable is the grace and flair with which the hatch can run rings around some of its peers. Inside is a stunning dual-multimedia intuitive interface that serves with purpose and complements the dapper surrounds. Other standard features extend to auto wipers and headlights, active park assist, blind-spot monitoring, active lane keep assistance, AEB, traffic sign detection, reversing camera and exit warnings.
