Generally speaking, the Volkswagen Golf is a reliable car, with the company's high-quality manufacturing prowess shining through. There have been recalls centred on former models of the Golf, including MY12-MY14 variants that were the subject of a recall over a problem concerning the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission found in numerous VW cars. There is, however, much greater consistency across recent years, while the brand's 5-year/unlimited km warranty is a compelling bonus, besting BMW's 3-year coverage, and something that is invaluable given the high repair costs associated with the VW Golf.
A question for the ages! If you've got a more modest budget, the VW Polo shares a lot of the great qualities of its (slightly) bigger brother at a sharper price, though it depends whether you can make do without that little bit of extra space. However, if the appeal of more room is too hard to turn down, and you can stretch that budget just a little more, the VW Golf has a more comprehensive tech offering, in addition to more premium finishes around the cabin. Each fun to drive, there is a bit more choice and grunt behind the engine of the VW Golf, but the Polo offers an easier drive ideal for inner-city conditions. You can't go wrong with either model!
With a long and proud history behind the VW Golf, you could take your pick from various models over the years and come out a winner depending on what you value most. Steer clear of anything dating too far back, unless you're looking for a nostalgic experience, for it will likely come with issues and is sure to be missing a wealth of advanced safety gear that has become mainstream in recent times. The all-new 2021 eighth generation (Mk 8) VW Golf sets a new standard for hot hatches, complete with an engine tune-up, tweaked chassis and revised gearbox that make for a more responsive replacement to the outgoing Mk 7 range. That said, run-out prices for Mk 7 models are sure to look attractive if you want a modern powerhouse hatch for a discount.

Alfa Romeo has been hard at work refining the Giulia. The engineers in Turin have updated the infotainment, interior trim, and driver assists to make its beautiful sports sedan a better rival for its German foes – and they’ve done a pretty good job of it. But the more mundane, mainstream Giulia isn’t what the red-blooded Alfisti want to know about. They want...
View ReviewSome great/useful features: the automatic door locking on my Golf is SO useful (it came as part of an additional package) I like the adaptive cruise control my husband uses speed limiter constantly on long trips. the fuel economy is amazing. Who needs electric? 5.1 L/100 from Brisbane to Childers - AC on, speedo on 107kph (about 101/102 real speed) fold down...
