First launched back in 2008 as a direct replacement for the Ferrari 430, the Ferrari 458 immediately gained traction as a benchmark model among supercars. It was put head-to-head against the likes of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Porsche 911 and McLaren 650S, yet the 458, available in both a coupe and Spider convertible format, was arguably streets ahead of its peers. The 458 boasted the performance, prestige and comfort to meet supercar status, albeit it has since been surpassed by a number of alternatives.
Yes, Ferrari officially discontinued production of the Ferrari 458 back in 2015. For Australia, that meant the 2016 model year was the last iteration available to local new car buyers. The 458 had secured a significant position within the market as a supercar, so it was only fitting that it would be replaced by something just as potent. Fortunately, the Ferrari 488 came along, paying tribute to a number of its mid-engined V8 ancestors, and still on sale at the time of writing.
While models like the Ferrari 360 Modena and the F430 referred exclusively to engine displacement in their naming convention, the Ferrari 458 embraces a different approach. It combines the engine displacement figure alongside the number of engine cylinders. This was the original naming convention Ferrari used for its supercars. So in the case of the 458 it refers to the 4.5-litre engine and 8 cylinders at hand.
