Kia RIO
If you’re in the market for a small hatch, the Kia Rio is one of the more attractive names that you might want to hone in on. Perfect for those on a budget, this unit doesn’t get carried away in terms of fanciness or extravagance. It is a rather no-nonsense car that simply makes for a dependable, practical, and handy companion. Whether it is inclusions like auto headlights, parking sensors, reversing camera, or hill-start assistance, the Kia Rio has a great amount of kit across the board. The interior is also quite roomy and open, with the layout feeling particularly effective, not just from a design perspective, but in terms of ease of operation. Every occupant has an impressive amount of space at their disposal, which makes this a comfortable ride for long trips, rather than a tiresome experience. Meanwhile, things lighten up a little as you hit the top of the range, with the GT-Line variant providing a more bombastic experience thanks to its turbo engine and sporty suspension set-up. If you were looking for a value hatch, this is it. But if you didn’t know you would end up in this corner of the market, you shouldn’t be surprised at all with the Kia Rio because it delivers exactly what it claims, and then some.

So in this bleak scene, it’s a refreshing story to see Kia’s Rio soldie...

Car brands are finding the Australian light-vehicle segment a tough one to navigate. The contemporary Australian shopper in this segment requests the features and tech from the class above – just in a smaller package. Overall, Australian-specification cars are some of the best-equipped in the world. The tyranny of distance makes a long options list hard, bot...

At 51 years young, I can barely remember much about my first car – a 1977 Mazda 323 auto hand-me-down from Mum, other than its suite of safety features can be surmised in ‘horn’ and ‘seatbelts’. No, I don’t remember the brakes or tyres being very safe at all. I ought to remember these things when tasked with reviewing the 2021 Rio Sport, Kia’s compact option...
