Despite a rather subdued appearance in the Australian market, Citroen are a long established European car maker with a fine dynasty as far as motoring excellence. So how does a relatively underappreciated auto company increase its market appeal? Easy! Roll out a hatch-come-crossover duo that pleasantly take motorists by surprise. The Citroen C3 is the company’s entry-level vehicle for typical day-to-day drivers. It’s exuberant and energetic style is quite something else, with abundant colour and accessory on display. A 3-cylinder, 1.2L turbo engine is paired with six-speed torque-converter auto transmission, resulting in a sprightly feel. Of course, one of the C3’s obvious characteristics is its compact and diminutive size (even in the SUV Aircross format), although courtesy of some clever space optimisation you’ll find a whole lot more room than you bargained for once the seats are folded down. As the Aircross carries a bit more weight it’s acceleration doesn’t quite match the C3 hatch, however, drivers of the SUV version have a superior view over the road thanks to the high-riding design. In essence, ergonomics play a vital role in achieving reliable levels of comfort, and the introduction of AEB on the base model will only enhance the overall package. If you haven’t considered the Citroen C3 or C3 Aircross as part of your car hunt, you could very well be missing out on something special here.

Citroen’s cheerful C3 hatch brings a sense of fun to the lightcar market, but in Australia’s serious newcar market, is there room to be frivolous?
