First launched in Australia during 2021, this compact crossover has been pitted against foes like the Hyundai Venue and the Mazda CX-3, with the three-variant range providing value-oriented buyers an alternative. Kia gave this model a local tune-up before it arrived down under, effectively tweaking the suspension set-up, and also incorporating a more conservative cabin design to increase its appeal to a wider audience. Those particulars aside, the Stonic is workmanlike in many respects. It comes with just about everything you’ll need, and it does a lot of things well. It has a five-star ANCAP safety rating, with features like AEB, forward-collision warning, driver attention warning, lane-keep assist, and lane-following assist found in each variant. In terms of practicality, the boot offers more than 350 litres of space, with 60:40-split-fold rear seating. On paper, the pair of engines, both with an output of 74kW, are a little ‘light’, but they are solid when in action. Naturally, the turbo three-pot is the pick of the duo, providing a handy bump up in terms of torque. Nonetheless, the Stonic range is frugal to run, and with a generous seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, you’d be wise to give this unit a closer inspection provided you’re content with a more relaxed ride dynamic.
