Suzuki Baleno
As car manufacturers compete on an unprecedented scale to offer the best value in the entry-level category, we’re seeing more great entrants like the Suzuki Baleno. This modest hatch optimises internal space magnificently, instilling a sense of rear space that wouldn’t seem plausible at first glance, in addition to above-average room in the boot. If it were not for the lowly price-point, you’d be none the wiser about where this car is positioned in the market, seeing as it’s packed with equipment and handy technology. The GL sports a 1.4L petrol motor, while the GLX Turbo is beefed up with a turbocharged 1L engine that adds more thrill. Neither engine sounds particularly big, however fitted to a car that weighs well under 1 tonne, you can still zip around courtesy of the tenacious acceleration and manage fuel conservatively. You’ll feel in touch with the road thanks to the Baleno’s soft suspension and solid handling, with the higher-spec variant benefitting from extra scope in its transmission. For fun on a budget, Suzuki has put together an enviable option for those who regularly commute in the city.

Xander Berkeley. Ring a bell? He should, as a Hollywood actor with over 240 performances to his name, I’m sure you’ve seen his work. Anything? How about we just call him ‘the stepdad from Terminator 2’, or ‘the doctor in Gattaca’, or more recently ‘Gregory from The Walking Dead’. Got him now? He may not have the star power of Cruise or Affleck, but just beca...

The Suzuki Baleno might not be doing the heavy lifting for the Japanese brand’s sales team, but you couldn’t deny it’s doing its fair share. Reintroduced to the Australian market in fourth-generation form in 2016 after a 15-year year hiatus, the nifty little five-door light hatchback supports the company’s top-selling Swift in a sea of Suzuki SUVs that inclu...

The fact of the Suzuki Baleno's existence is one of the more puzzling features on the automotive landscape. It's a car that pits itself against all manner of worthy competition - some of it exceedingly so - in the small hatch segment. People still buy what the industry calls light cars (in ever-diminishing numbers) so perhaps Suzuki thought offering two woul...

So, my first-ever car review. For many youngsters like myself, it’s a dream to drive the newest and coolest cars, then share our thoughts with the masses. You can imagine then, how excited I was when I was handed the keys to a brand new 2016 Suzuki Baleno as the subject for my first critical write-up. I know what you’re thinking, yawn. However, while it may...

Suzuki hedges its bets by offering two small hatchback lines for fiscally-challenged buyers after a solid first car or cheap grocery getter. But while the more popular, pricier and mature Swift lures those after a sportier bent, the Suzuki Baleno, updated in late 2019 as a “new” Series II, remains the larger and arguably sounder choice, the all-rounder sat a...

It may seem somewhat illogical for someone who works as a motoring journalist, but I don’t own a car. A shocking and possibly damning admission, I know, but before I get thrown to the wolves, let me explain. As a cash-strapped uni student my beloved first car (a faithful 1993 Toyota Corolla) had to be sold. But my aversion to any form of public transport mea...
