A solid choice for first-time car buyers, the Barina is a nice little run-about car that is dependable, frugal with fuel, and rather practical to boot. Although it is no longer in production, its style still holds up very well, and while it is simple, that works in its favour here if you are looking for something that fits the bill as far as a daily driver for the inner-city. When it comes to repairs and maintenance, the Barina is also rather affordable to look after, so if you don't mind compromising on a few safety or technology features, this could be a bargain second-hand purchase.
While the Holden Barina was a name reserved for the Australian new car market, the equivalent car in the United States was the Sonic, which was under the Chevrolet badge thanks to its parent company General Motors. This isn't the only model that was shared across the two markets, with a number of Holden and General Motors vehicles sold in each other's home market.
It was one of the highlights of this compact unit, and it is still a strong point compared with many of today's cars, but the Holden Barina boasted a superb fuel economy rating. In the last year of production for the Australian new car market, the estimated fuel consumption rating for the Barina was 6.8L per 100km, which is quite impressive by any standard. This frugal hatchback is fuelled by an efficient petrol engine that punches above its weight.

The light car segment is more competitive than it's ever been in Australia, and buyers get more value for money than they ever have. The Barina has its work cut out.
View ReviewNo beep beep here. Holden’s latest Barina update is indicative of how much the light-class five-door hatchback has grown since the boxy MB series first appeared locally in 1985. As is the way with most things automotive, small cars tend not to remain small cars and the latest Barina is quite a bit larger in all dimensions bar overall length (by a small margi...
View ReviewThe Holden Barina is a nameplate that is arguably better known than many of the others in the company’s line-up. It has been around longer than Trax, Equinox, Colorado, Trailblazer, Spark… in fact, longer than everything but Astra and Commodore. The current-generation Barina itself has been around for a while, too: it launched way back in 2012, and it’s fair...
View ReviewNow more than ever, the crowded micro car segment is a battleground for manufacturers and now more than ever, those same micro cars are more comprehensively equipped and more compelling value for money than they’ve ever been. The updated 2017 Holden Barina has some work to do then to win over the hearts and minds of Australian buyers looking for a value for...
View ReviewCAN a Camaro-inspired facelift and some pretty new wheels save the six-year-old Holden Barina from pensioner status? WHAT IS IT? A belated facelift for Holden’s ageing Barina – the first proper update since the current TM series launched in October 2011 – focusing on styling, equipment, model rationalisation and variant rebranding. WHY WE’RE TESTING IT? To s...
