Renault Clio
It’s built up a reputation for its fancy looks but the Renault Clio is a lot more than just a show pony. The small hatch comes with a varying level of trim, so you can opt for simplicity, flair or aggressive sportiness in the top-spec RS variants. Some of the standard inclusions are parking sensors, reversing camera, auto headlights, hill-start assistance and keyless operation. Renault is introducing an all-new fifth generation Clio in 2019, and the changes are profound. First, the cabin has been revitalised with a technological overhaul. Most of the internal controls have been incorporated into a swish state-of-the-art touchscreen display, the sort of thing you’d find at the heart of an advanced home theatre setup. Elsewhere, there is a blend of sharp-looking textures that come together for a modern look. The other major change is the new platform at the centre of the car, which makes for a more dynamic ride. At this end of the market among the more affordable cars going around, there is a modest engine line-up. However, power to weight ratio is commendable, and the steering makes this nimble hatch come to life. Offering French flair and sophistication, the new Renault Clio is set to win over a lot of hearts.

Renault's Clio RS hyper-compact has had a midlife face lift. We check out the mid-range Cup version to see if a fiddling of pricing and spec can bring some added glow to the heroic hot hatch's halo.

The SUV in front of us slows down. Not sharply, but with a firmness that would have you reaching for the brake pedal pretty sharply. I don’t though. In fact, I’ve got my foot wedged onto the lip of the dashboard, up behind the steering wheel, as far from being able to reach the pedals as I can get. Don’t try this at home, kiddies -- professional driver, clos...

I'm going to reveal something of myself here - I used to be a RenaultSport Clio owner. This is what the purists call what we now know as Clio RS, and I find myself constantly corrected yet unrepentant. It was a 172 - a nuggety three-door with wheels that looked too small, a weird seating position and a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine that was big on tor...

It's been five years since Renault turned its back on its own naturally aspirated, manual gearbox Clio RS providence and lobbed with a comparatively weapons-grade third generation hell-bent on reformulating compact grocery-getters with lofty performance capabilities. Whereas hot hatches French and otherwise were once all-chassis, low-powered propositions tha...

THE HOT hatch formula has always been a simple one. Take a diminutive chassis, plonk a relatively large engine under the bonnet, and let the good times roll. In recent years hot hatches have been in a renaissance, growing into brawlers with flared haunches and fire-spitting attitudes. Power has skyrocketed, with some next-gen models rumoured to be 350kW+ all...
