A name that made an impression in the budget end of town, the Spark was a tiny five-door hatch produced by Holden. It may not have had the pizzazz or upmarket appeal as some other hatchbacks on the market, but this is one of the most effortless cars to drive you'll find. It is light and easy to steer, simple to park, plus it also feels rather connected and in harmony with the road. The tech offering in the last years of production was quite a solid highlight, so if you are looking at second-hand options, don't miss out on this important point!
Yes, Holden first entered the automotive industry back in 1908, which is why it enjoyed such an iconic status within the Australian new car market. In 1931 it became a subsidiary of the United States–based General Motors, and that resulted in the company being renamed to General Motors-Holden's Ltd. Two further naming changes took place over the next 70-odd years, with Holden Ltd becoming the formal name in 1998, and then GM Holden Ltd in 2005. GM played an influential role in deciding to retire the Holden brand down under.
Among the lightest cars ever produced in any mass volume, the Holden Spark had a weight of just 948kg. This was largely due to its diminutive size, with the height of this unit coming in at just over 1.52 metres, the length just shy of 3.6 metres, and the wheelbase coming in at a smidge less than 2.39 metres. These dimensions contribute to the nimble and athletic nature of the Spark.

View ReviewHolden Spark LT Road Test The Spark’s is comfortable, capable and attractive. Practical design and cutesy aesthetics will see it appeal to a mostly female demographic, but a notable lack of zippiness is disappointing given its size. While the surprisingly roomy Spark is a very viable city-car option for a young professional on the go, its price and lack of d...
View ReviewAndrew Chesterton road tests and reviews the updated Holden Spark LT with specs, fuel consumption and verdict. The micro-car segment in Australia has driven off a cliff. We are shunning our smallest cars in a way we never have before, and nobody seems to be entirely sure why. The strength of the second-hand market is one suspected culprit, while another is t...
View ReviewThe new Spark is an important car for Holden in more ways than one. Not only does it represent the future of the brand, an internationally developed vehicle that is tuned locally by Holden's engineers, it will play a role in attracting new, younger customers. Sitting beneath the Barina in the range it is the entry-point model, and the brand will be hoping to...
View ReviewIf variety and balance are the keys to an interesting and successful life, then this Holden Spark LS should be the yin to my old Mercedes-AMG C63 long-termer’s yang. From a $170K twin-turbo V8 to a $14K price-leader with a plastic steering wheel, plastic hubcaps and a teensy 73kW atmo 1.4. Hardly enough to get the pulse racing, but I have a deep affection fo...
