The starting point for the Fiat 500 range is the Lounge variant, which retails for $18,950 plus on-road costs. At the top of the range, the Dolcevita variant goes for $23,650 before on-road costs. Both of these prices exclude registration, stamp duty, dealer delivery fees and other government charges. While the Fiat 500 is offered with just a petrol engine, new car buyers can choose between a five-speed manual or five-speed auto dualogic transmission.
Like most of today's cars, the Fiat 500 is a dependable unit that will last you a generation. That means if you want a compact and durable car to go the distance, the Fiat 500 is right up there. On average, you can expect the Fiat's engine to last about 320,000 kilometres to 400,000 kilometres, however, that also requires that you take care of this little unit and keep on top of repairs and maintenance. All up, that corresponds with a lifespan of about 15 years, by which time you may well want to upgrade to something with the latest tech and safety aids.
Fiats are a little dearer than other makes of car to repair, which is owing to the fact that it is an international brand with specific components and parts that are imported into the country and not available in bulk quantity. You should also consider the broader reliability of the Fiat range, and while issues are normal for any car from time to time, the Fiat 500 does encounter some more common problems like oil in the engine, power steering loss, as well as problems with the electrics. A Fiat probably won't break the bank, but there are more affordable hatchbacks when it comes to repairs like the Hyundai i30, Kia Picanto and MG 3.
