Kia RIO
With seven variants across the range, the 2022 Kia Rio is a light hatch that reminds us there is still a place for this car format in the Australian new car market. The crowning highlight is the GT-Line version, which is the only model that boasts a European-style turbo petrol motor - for completeness, it’s a 1.0-litre turbo three-pot. It is a marked upgrade from what is otherwise a 1.4-litre naturally aspirated engine found in the rest of the range. In any case, the Rio is a balanced and engaging ride, and in the top-spec guise, the Rio GT-Line is a formidable competitor to rival hatches from Volkswagen and Hyundai, among others, yet with the benefit of a sharp price-tag. There is a decent amount of space inside the cabin, and you’ll find the level of practicality on offer is quite surprising for what is a small unit. As we’ve become used to seeing from Kia, standard features are extensive, including hill-start assistance, auto headlights, parking sensors and reversing camera right throughout the range. If you’re not quite sold on a crossover SUV, the Kia Rio might be a great alternative, especially the aggressive GT-Line.

The Kia Rio may carry an air of Euro sophistication in its external styling, but open the door and youll be welcomed by a much more basic interior. Thats no bad thing, though a back to basics fit-out is one thing the Rio uses to its advantage.

When it arrived here not quite four years ago, the current generation of Kia Rio established a reputation for good value among other light hatch contenders. Improvements have sweetened the deal since, including this year’s upgrade to a new 8.0-inch infotainment screen and the introduction of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the test vehicle, trimme...

It’s dark times in the world of small hatchbacks. Once a strong segment in Australia’s market, safety, emissions, and logistics challenges have driven the price up on stalwart favourites (like the Toyota Yaris) and pushed many nameplates (like the Honda Jazz) out of Australia altogether. So in this bleak scene, it’s a refreshing story to see Kia’s Rio soldie...

Car brands are finding the Australian light-vehicle segment a tough one to navigate. The contemporary Australian shopper in this segment requests the features and tech from the class above – just in a smaller package. Overall, Australian-specification cars are some of the best-equipped in the world. The tyranny of distance makes a long options list hard, bot...
