A range-topping wagon, available in either its traditional format, or more athletic crossover body, the Volvo V90 takes it up to the German trio of luxury cars in every respect. Underpinning the car is a solid and exceptionally well built platform that serves as the hallmark in some of the Swedish car manufacturer’s other models. That is also the starting point for the classy and tasteful exterior, which looks splendid from any angle but especially when its long drawn-out front bonnet is visible in all its glory. The cabin is adorned with soft supple leather, as well as wood trim and plush carpet. Sporting a large interactive touchscreen, it’s evident that this will become your best friend on all your long-distance adventures, but of course technology shines in other departments like first-class safety. Leg room and visibility from the rear is spacious, making for an airy feel to the cabin. In the boot, you can take all your weekend gear with you since there is ample room at hand. The turbo engine offering is broad, powerful and utterly mesmerising, especially in unison with the aggressive gearbox. But above everything, there is an impressive level of responsiveness and acceleration from standstill, with controlled grip always prevailing. The Volvo V90 delivers a gratifying experience, just asking to be tamed.
Volvo made the decision to retire the V90 Cross Country wagon from local showrooms in the middle of 2021, which comes as the Swedish auto-maker also phases the model out of other car markets as well. The company has not designated a specific replacement for the V90, instead opting to push the smaller brother of the V90 in the V60 Cross Country, which is now Volvo's only wagon across the local car market.
Starting with safety, and the V90 scooped up a five-star safety rating from ANCAP, as well as a five-star Euro NCAP result. With some of the best safety technology of any car on the market, the V90 is in a class of its own. But that is also backed up by the build quality and attention to detail in the V90, which are second to none. Thanks to its dependable nature, the V90 won't have any troubles cementing a place in the family.
The conventional V90 wagon never quite made it to Australia for new car buyers, while Volvo has recently made the call to discontinue the V90 Cross Country. Nonetheless, the difference between the duo is much the same as the difference between the V60 variants. In particular, the V90 Cross Country is slightly bigger than the regular V90 wagon, offering SUV-like improvements that make it competent in off-road conditions, but without changing the dynamics to resemble an SUV. Upgrades include a raised suspension, standard all-wheel drive and a revamped aesthetic that is more rugged in appearance.
