It might not have the household-name status as that of its peers, but the Skoda Fabia is an exceptional car, particularly for the urban motorist. It is ideal as either a first car or a daily-drive vehicle, offering a fine balance between style, functionality and performance. The Fabia is well-equipped in terms of features and accessories, and at such a competitive price, it really does emphasise that you can still do very well out of a city hatch.
Sadly for Skoda fans, the model has struggled to gain headway in terms of penetrating the local new car market. Since 2017 the company has generally sold just 50 to 60 Fabia units per month, and despite a vastly improved offering, those sales still remain subdued. Nonetheless, the Skoda Fabia has not actually been discontinued, in fact, it is still sold in hatch and wagon formats, while an all-new version is on the cards as well.
The standout here is the 4-cylinder turbocharged 1.0-litre TSI engine found in the 81 TSI and 81 TSI Monte Carlo variants. This engine offers 81kW and 200Nm, which on paper might not sound like much, but for a pint-sized car like the Fabia it is more than enough to ensure a zippy and lively level of performance. Paired with a seven-speed auto transmission, it feels refined and runs incredibly economically.
