Yes, the IONIQ 5 went on sale for Australian new car buyers in September, 2021. Such was the fanfare surrounding the release of the car, Hyundai's local website crashed when it released the first 240 units for pre-order. It has since released more units to other buyers, although if you are waiting for your opportunity, you might want to take note that Hyundai Australia has very limited stock for the IONIQ 5, and that it has been officially sold out for some time now. That might make it hard to actually get your hands on one.
Local prices for the all-electric IONIQ 5 begin at $71,900 before on-road costs, which is that starting price of the rear-wheel drive Extended-Range variant powered by a single-motor. On the other hand the dual-motor all-wheel-drive Extended-Range variant is priced from $75,900 plus on-road costs such as stamp duty, dealer delivery charges, registration, and other government fees. The good news is that the IONIQ 5 range will get cheaper, with a Standard Range comprising more affordable trim grades on its way at the time of writing.
A question that many have been wondering for some time now. However, Australia, unlike many other countries with higher uptake of electric vehicles, has yet to really drive home the uptake of EVs, whether it be through tax incentives or other perks. What's more, Aussie motorists have an infatuation for utes and 4WDs, and there are even fewer options available locally that tap into this theme - even though progress is being made. In the meantime, with EV sales so low, auto-makers' can't quite move on prices until demand starts to really kick off.
