In our first piece covering July’s new car sales, we looked into overall sales across the industry as well as a breakdown by vehicle segment. This time around we’ll focus on how different makes and models fared last month.
New car sales by brand
Although it is suffering from lengthy wait times that continue to blow out, Toyota remains the clear best-seller across the Australian new car market, even managing to increase its sales last month versus a year ago.
In second place, Mazda bounced back and edged out the likes of Hyundai and Kia, which both saw a major sales leap, while Mitsubishi followed in fifth spot, with sales up 5.8% to 5,611 units.
Ford sales were down around 20% last month, despite the arrival of a new Ford Ranger, although the backlog there may translate into better performances over the coming months.
M.G. has entrenched itself in the top 10, although its sales growth has now slowed down given the high base its sales are now coming off.
Rounding out the leading brands were Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, and Isuzu.
A host of brands struggled last month, with Nissan, Volkswagen, Lexus, Skoda, and Land Rover all posting major double-digit declines.
New car sales by model
There is no catching the Toyota HiLux, which leads the sales charts for 2022 with no nearest competition. The Japanese auto-maker is on track to record its seventh annual sales win in a row, which would be about half as long as the legendary Holden Commodore once enjoyed.
Across the top 20 best-selling cars, 12 vehicles were SUVs, 5 were utes, while 3 were small passenger vehicles.
The Ford Ranger is back in second spot, although momentum is yet to pick up given a number of variants for the new model are yet to enter production, and with stock still largely on the way. Nonetheless, the Ranger beat out popular names like the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tuscon, and the Toyota Corolla.
