Weekly Dealer Car Enquiries: Sunday August 16

As this data is considered somewhat representative of broader industry activity, and serves as one of the more insightful leading indicators for potential car sales, we hope it will fulfil a few purposes for our broad audience. First, to document not just how we’re performing as business, but how dealers and the wider market stand to perform, so you don’t have to wait til that next set of official sales data.

Without further ado, here’s what happened over the last week.

Total new car enquiries

In the week ending Sunday, August 16, dealer connections rose by approximately 150 to 912 in total. The move represented a 19.5% increase week-on-week.

We believe the recent increase in enquiries stems from buoyant demand in some of the regions that have been recovering economically in the wake of COVID-19. Of course, Melbourne continues to drag on the picture across the overall market, but the fact that other markets are holding up well is a positive sign for the industry and general consumer behaviour.

New car interest by brand

The surge in dealer connections was largely fuelled by two leading brands, Kia and Mazda. The amount of interest in each brand almost doubled week-on-week, leading to some of the highest results we’ve seen for each make since the PriceMyCar platform made its debut. It also meant that Mazda retained its position atop the list of the most sought-after cars, while Kia edged back into second place after a temporary slip.

There was also a strong performance from Subaru, which leapfrogged Toyota into third on the list, as well as Isuzu, but otherwise most other brands saw comparable levels of interest as the week prior.
