Weekly Dealer Car Enquiries: January 31, 2021

In this series, which we hope to bring to you on a regular basis, we’ll be detailing some of the key numbers and trends that we’re seeing in terms of dealer connections made through our site.

As this data is considered somewhat representative of broader industry activity, and serves as one of the more insightful leading indicators for potential car sales, we hope it will fulfil a few purposes for our broad audience. First, to document not just how we’re performing as business, but how dealers and the wider market stand to perform, so you don’t have to wait til that next set of official sales data.

Without further ado, here’s what happened over the last week.

Total new car enquiries

In the week ending Sunday, January 31, the number of new car enquiries via PriceMyCar hit a new high, coming in at 2,337. This number was a three-week high, topping what was formerly the best result we had seen.

With last week’s numbers amounting to 1,983 inbound enquiries, the latest results represent a significant week-on-week increase, with leads growing 17.9% across the comparable period.

It remains to be seen whether the snap lockdown imposed in Perth on Sunday evening will have any impact on consumer confidence, however, the results since the start of the year continue to point towards building sentiment that should serve the new car industry well.

New car interest by brand

Although we’re accustomed to seeing a strong rise in the most-favoured brands when total new car enquiries rise across any given week, much of the legwork was done outside the top three. In fact, there was a slight pullback in terms of dealer connections for Kia vehicles, with interest in Ford and Mazda eking out a modest rise.

Some of the bolters, however, were Volkswagen, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz, which each saw a strong increase in the number of inbound pricing queries. In the case of Mercedes, week-on-week growth was just shy of 75%.

In keeping with the theme, Audi was also the beneficiary of more search interest, as were some of the Chinese brands like Haval and LDV, which had a stellar 2020 on the back of their appeal to value-oriented car buyers.
