Volkswagen Golf
Once considered cramped, impractical and short on power, hatchbacks are now roaring to life across our roads. With its cult-like following, the Volkswagen Golf was instrumental in defining the turnaround and success of the hatch segment, showcasing raw power and dynamism across its range. Split into three distinct versions - the TSI, GTi and R - each offers motorists a different value statement, something further supported with several variants available, particularly in the expansive TSI range. The 2019 lineup has also been treated to numerous performance upgrades while priced effectively. The GTi now features a seven-speed dual-clutch auto transmission and a 2L, 180kW engine that is quickly closing on the famed R series and its blistering 212kW. The R and Alltrack TSI lines maintain an edge in traction with their AWD configuration, however the GTI and other TSI variants are no slouches when it comes to keeping things tight and balanced. Interior design and technology is first-rate across the VW Golf range and advanced safety comes standard. With its eye-catching looks and outstanding build quality, it doesn’t skimp on class. Most of all, the Volkswagen Golf is hard to top as one of the most entertaining cars to drive on the market.

Few vehicles match the pedigree, history and legacy of the Volkswagen Golf GTI. You could say the GTI popularised the hot hatch, such is the indelible mark it has forged on the performance car scene since its introduction in 1976. Today, the Golf GTI is still widely regarded as the all-rounder benchmark in the front-drive hot hatch set. Yet, against a backdr...

The GTI badge has been in existence almost as long as the venerable Volkswagen Golf itself and despite having started its life as a skunkworks project, the iconic performance variant has managed to outlive countless rivals to become inseparable from the phrase "hot hatch." Now in its Mark 8 form, the GTI itself has long since been usurped by faster, more pow...

The 2021 Volkswagen Golf is still an important product for Volkswagen, even though it’s no longer the brand’s most-popular vehicle.Back in 2017, and according to the brand’s annual report, the Golf was top-of-the-pops with a global production figure of 968,284 – some 200,000 vehicles ahead of the smaller Polo hatchback and Tiguan SUV.A year later in 2018, th...

The launch of a new Volkswagen Golf is still an important one for the company in Australia, though it’s not quite as critical as it once was. It isn’t the early 1990s anymore, where Volkswagen Australia sold only Golfs, vans and a handful of Passats. Since that time, as the company’s fortunes have grown in Australia, so too has its range of products. Now, Vo...

This is the generational model that will take the Volkswagen Golf to its 50th anniversary in 2024. The question is whether the prospect of such a milestone prompted the German brand to abandon decades of evolutionary approach to the world’s most classless hatchback. VW’s designers have certainly tried to be braver with the Golf’s exterior. While few will con...

Some great/useful features: the automatic door locking on my Golf is SO useful (it came as part of an additional package) I like the adaptive cruise control my husband uses speed limiter constantly on long trips. the fuel economy is amazing. Who needs electric? 5.1 L/100 from Brisbane to Childers - AC on, speedo on 107kph (about 101/102 real speed) fold down...
