Prices for the latest Toyota HiLux range from $23,590 for the entry-level HiLux Workmate, all the way through to $69,990 for the premium and high-spec HiLux Rugged X (4X4). As always, these retail prices exclude on-road costs, stamp duty and dealer delivery charges. Across the range there are a number of variants on offer at different price-points, including diesel and petrol options, plus your choice of either a 2.4-litre model, 2.7-litre five-speed manual or 2.8-litre six-speed auto.
Australian drivers are fortunate enough to be able to secure a HiLux with relative ease, but spare a thought for our American friends who can't buy a Toyota HiLux as easily due to antiquated laws. Believe it or not, the 1980s saw a law dubbed the 'Chicken Tax' that made it difficult to import new cars produced abroad. The law encompasses a 25% tax on overseas-made light-duty trucks. Having been produced under a series of different names locally thereafter, Toyota has most-recently rebirthed the HiLux in the US as the Toyota Tacoma.
An award winner and perennial best-seller atop the new car sales charts in Australia, the Toyota HiLux is an impressive unit fit for the tough demands of any worksite. Tradies love it for its load-carrying capacity, its durability and reliability, plus a gutsy level of performance and dynamism that makes this fun to drive. Importantly, you can bring along the rest of the family in the dual-cab variants, making this an excellent choice for a tough work vehicle or versatile family car.

Like an old shoe, the HiLux remains the best-selling ute in Australia. But, is the shine starting to wear off? Paul Maric finds out.
View ReviewThe new 2020 Toyota HiLux Rogue is a significant update of a model first introduced in Australia in 2018. While based on the popular SR5 dual-cab 2.8-litre turbo-diesel including a six-speed automatic and 4x4 drivetrain, the Rogue gets its own look – essentially a resculpted front bumper – developed with input from Toyota’s Australian design office and inspi...
View ReviewThe exterior is tough but sporty - with 18-inch black alloy wheels, sleek lines, plus a much needed step to clamber into the seats, or the back of the ute tray. This version has a hard top roller cover for the tray, which opens and closes with the touch of a button, and locks easily with the car's main central locking function. The cover gives you security a...
View ReviewToday we’re going to take a look at something truly exciting that’s been developed by Toyota’s go-fast team, TRD. It’s the 2017 Toyota HiLux TRD. Wait, what? Toyota Racing Development hasn’t really worked this new model over to within an inch of its life, and it really hasn’t done anything to make it a much sportier than the standard vehicle. But it is more...
View ReviewA 4X4 dual-cab ute is, in the ideal world, viewed as the ultimate off-road multi-tool A real jack-of-all-trades when it comes to offering the versatility needed by a large number of tourers. Being able to lug your – or your mate’s – furniture to a new abode, carrying bikes, watercraft, camping gear, the family pan-licker or just the shopping are, along with...
