It’s strong, rugged and full of overbearing intimidation, but that’s exactly why drivers flock to the Mercedes-AMG G-Class. Never mind the retro appearance that dates back to the 70s, everything beyond the image and charm of the G63 is more than old-school appeal. What’s more, it doesn’t stop at a V6, here it is raw unadulterated power courtesy of a thunderous 4L V8 bi-turbo engine that can pump out up to 430kW and 850Nm. Nothing comes close to it! The AMG upgrade also flows through to several other areas, inside and out, but none of these tweaks come close to having the impact as that of the gearbox, where a nine-speed ultra-short shift transmission pushes this unit into elite sports handling territory. With a refined suspension setup and AMG ride control, bitumen you also have immense road handling qualities, with the G-Class showcasing precise steering. And then there is the sense of euphoria when you take it off-road. That’s because the genetics of this SUV revolve almost exclusively around difficult and arduous terrain, with three differential locks, passive damping, ladder frame plus first-rate approach and departure angles setting the scene for a car that can fight its way through just about anything. It wouldn’t be a Mercedes if there wasn’t a generous serving of rigour, reliability and dependability, so what you may depart from inside a more traditional car cabin, you are provided with exceptional payload and towing capacity. It may look like a military vehicle, even to some extent drive like and operate with the visceral chortle of a military vehicle, but that’s the lure of the G-Class. It doesn’t pay to be shy.
