An adaptation of the A-Class range, the Mercedes-AMG CLA has become somewhat of a sensation in recent years, and now enters its second generation. Compared with the last version, as well as its shared namesakes, this extensive set of coupes have additional flair, space and composure on the road. First things first, the CLA has a more athletic stance to its design with an aerodynamic overhaul, even though it shares the same wheelbase, chassis and engines as the A-Class range. However it’s not just the outside that gets a sprucing up, with the interior given a deluxe makeover. In fact, compared with both the A and C Class models, the CLA shows them up handsomely with splendid trim and comfort. As for the dynamics, steering and suspension feel confident and unflappable, plus the addition of all-wheel drive in the 4MATIC variants adds another level of assurance. But above all else, what makes this a car to be reckoned with is the AMG design and performance upgrade. Between a mashing of accented highlights and bespoke steel detailing, as well as optimised engine dynamics and sports handling, this is a case of be careful what you wish for. Sometimes a great car only needs a small pinch of extravagance to turn it into an excellent car, and that sums up the AMG CLA.
