As an upmarket brand, Lexus already produces a number of great cars. You can now add the ES300h to this list, because this mid-size unit is a wonderful all-round sedan with few if any downsides. The ES300h brings a bit of polish and sparkle to the hybrid category thanks to a glorious cabin, spacious layout, extensive list of features and safety gear, refined ride, and ultra-efficient operation. A standout name in a sector that is increasingly becoming more competitive, it'll take some effort for Lexus' rivals to top the ES300h.
While the Lexus ES300h is brisk and zippy, it's not quite an out-and-out sprinter. This is a sedan that is more about comfort and refinement, however, the 0-100km/h time of 8.9 seconds is still commendable. The front-wheel-drive set-up and petrol-electric powertrain make for a great combination, but efficiency is the priority here. Pleasingly, however, there is more gusto and smoothness here than the previous iteration of the ES300h, with 160kW and 300Nm syncing fluidly with the electronic continuously-variable transmission (eCVT).
As the luxury offshoot marque to Toyota, the Lexus brand has strong ties to Japan. That means the production of many of its high-end vehicles takes place in its home market, where it also serves oen of the biggest right-hand-drive markets in the world. The Lexus ES300h is built at Lexus' award-winning Kyushu assembly plant, with the model imported down under along with a number of other high-profile Lexus models.

Alfa Romeo has been hard at work refining the Giulia. The engineers in Turin have updated the infotainment, interior trim, and driver assists to make its beautiful sports sedan a better rival for its German foes – and they’ve done a pretty good job of it. But the more mundane, mainstream Giulia isn’t what the red-blooded Alfisti want to know about. They want...
