Making the move to a fixed-price agency model in Australia in 2021, Honda changed its strategy to prioritise margins over volume. Typically, a dealer sales model means the local division of a car company orders from its head office and then sells stock to dealerships across the country, which act as franchisees and own their own stock. Now, in what is arguably the biggest change the company has made in Australia, Honda streamlined its presence from 106 dealer sites to around 90 Honda Centres, with two-thirds of those covering rural areas of Australia, and the other third centred in urban locations. As part of the agency model, Honda prices are firm, drive-away prices, so there is no more room for haggling, and the company owns all the stock you see in your local showroom. On the plus side, every new Honda benefits from fixed-price servicing in each of its first five services, typically being either 50,00km of driving, or a period of five years. And on top of that, if you’re in the market to check out the brand’s higher-spec range, you’ll be pleased to know there is a digital focus including an ‘experience platform’.
