Whether you are after a daily driver, commuting vehicle, or dependable workhorse, the GWM Ute is a surprise packet in a field dominated by the likes of the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger. Whereas those better-known rivals come with the backing of many recommendations, the GWM Ute is a name that will make its own reputation over the coming years, and thanks to an impressive array of features, sturdy engine and towing capacity, plus commendable ride quality, the Cannon Ute can take on all sorts of challenges.
Each of the variants in the GWM Ute line-up feature the same engine, which is a four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor. It is capable of producing 120kW of power at 3600 rpm, equivalent to 160 horsepower, and offers 400Nm of torque at 1500rpm. These features perhaps underplay how strong the Cannon Ute truly is, because it has ample power for a variety of tasks on the most heavy-duty of worksites. With a braked towing capacity of up to 3,000 kilograms, that is as good as some of the more affordable variants in the HiLux line-up, which are rated for 2,800 kilograms braked towing capacity.
The GWM Ute is designed and manufactured by GWM Group, which is China's largest SUV and ute maker. GWM Group is parent company to a number of subsidiaries, including some of those that are marketed as individual brands down under, including Great Wall, and Haval. Nonetheless, GWM Group has cemented a first-class name for vehicles in its home market, with the brand recognised as the leading ute brand for over 20 years, and with its success now spanning internationally, with over 4 million vehicle sales and counting.
The 2021 GWM Ute enters the market as the first product from a revised and rebranded Great Wall. In an attempt to distance itself from branding efforts of the past, GWM wants to be known for value, as opposed to Great Wall’s focus on cut-price. The naming, perhaps, could have been a little better thought out. GWM’s ute is called the Ute. Three spec levels ar...

The economy is spot on 9.2km, the comfort is amazing, the driving is relaxed and enjoyable, maybe the lane assist is a little aggressive, but can be turned down, however safety is a good fe...
