Lacklustre sales were ultimately responsible for the demise of the Volkswagen CC after the model year 2017 iteration, with new car buyers tuning out of the model. It was subsequently replaced by the larger and more comfortable VW Arteon, which was also a replacement to the Passat and Jetta. In recent years, passenger vehicles have seen a mighty challenge in the form of SUVs, so there are now fewer options to choose from when it comes to sedans and wagons.
Originally, the Volkswagen CC was marketed as the Volkswagen Passat CC in its first generation. It was then afforded its own model designation, giving it a slightly different set-up. Whereas the Passat was more in line with a sedan or saloon, the CC was a variation of this design that embraced a coupe-like design with sweeping roofline. It means the CC has had to do without some of the second-row headroom and boot space as that found in the Passat, although the pair share many of the same characteristics in terms of features, amenity and mechanical underpinnings.
In top-spec, the Volkswagen CC is a particularly sprightly unit, with the European V6 version able to charge from 0-100km/h in just 5.6 seconds. There are differences by region, however, with the US version of the CC clocking in at 6.6 seconds due to a variation on the gearing set-up. The top-of-the-line version sold in Australia followed the European spec, so it is a lightning quick unit, although most variants sold were equipped with a more conservative engine that had a sprint time of 8.5 seconds.
