A step towards the more conservative end of the design spectrum, the Subaru Liberty looks refined and fit for the elite. But its innocent looks are just that, backed by an undemanding price-point, particularly with respect to the dominant power available, all-round grace of the ride quality, and the sheer variety of gear enclosed. Not only does this equipment cover the most recent technological safety benefits, but some invaluable driving aids too. Under the hood there is a 4-cylinder 2.5L motor in the base variants, but in the higher spec versions there is a 3.6L V6 calling the shots. While the latter may consume a little extra fuel, its power output is disproportionally higher, turning it into a real speedster. Passengers in the rear will be impressed with the liberal leg and head room, while the boot also does an admirable job of rounding out the practicality stakes. Nothing should be taken away from the engineering finesse on display, with great unity and balance flowing through the chassis and excellent levels of grip even on slippery roads. Sometimes first impressions can be misleading, but here it’s for all the right reasons and you’ll love the contrast between distinction and fierce enthusiasm.
