The Smart car was was discontinued from the Australian new car market back in 2016. Overseas, the brand has enjoyed a little more run-time, albeit the US and Canada also called time on the all-electric import following the 2019 model year. The Fortwo, first launched in Europe back in the 90s, hasn't seen the success as that of some of its peers in recent times, and with sales sluggish, the end of the line was inevitable in North America. In the meantime, Smart cars are still being sold in Europe, and a Smart SUV could be on the cards, but nothing is set in stone at this stage.
Technically speaking, it's more or less a case of a Mercedes creation, with the Smart marque owned and produced by the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, Daimler AG. You might say it is a similar arrangement as that of BMW and the Mini brand. Nonetheless, the Smart brand no longer has a presence in Australia, with the last of its models, the Fortwo, discontinued some time ago following model year 2016.
