Nissan Patrol
Every so often you catch wind of a step change in a vehicle, which leans away from its predecessors. The latest Nissan Patrol represents a conspicuous departure from past models, and it’s all the better for it. Headlining this versatile SUV is an automatic 4WD system, which allows drivers to sit back and let the vehicle take the initiative when deciding which drive mode to activate. Furthermore, the 4WD mode is integrated with dual-range gearing and rear differential lock, facilitating deep off-road adventures. Nissan has incorporated a generous serving of equipment and safety features, with active safety aids like lane-departure and forward-crash warnings fitted to the premium Ti-L variant. Given the sheer size and weight of the Patrol, a hearty dose of power is necessary. Luckily, an enormous V8 drives each version. Partnered with independent suspension and light steering, it makes for an aggressive unit. But for its fight and combativeness, there is profound storage capacity, visibility, room and comfort. It may have been some time coming, but hands down this is the best Nissan Patrol yet.

If you’ve read any of our recent reviews, you’ll know we rate the 2020 Nissan Patrol highly. In fact, even the first iteration of the Y62 stacked up well, especially value-wise, with the recent facelift ensuring it looked sharper and more contemporary. On paper at least, the only real issue – as noted in my most recent review – is the fact we don’t get the b...

The Nissan Patrol has plied Australian roads and tracks for 60 years. The G60 model went on sale here in 1960 and was a rugged, utilitarian beast, but it proved its worth when, in 1962, it took geologist Reg Sprigg and his family on the first motorised crossing of the Simpson Desert. That competence has underpinned the Patrol's evolution ever since and now t...

The Nissan Y62 Series 5 Patrol is the iconic go-anywhere rival to the equally legendary and off-road-tough Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series. Like the ‘Cruiser the current Patrol is aging, having been around for a decade now. So, did the late-2019 update to the Patrol wind back the clock with new styling, tech and safety? What’s it like to live with on-the-road...

The first Nissan Patrol went on sale in Japan back in 1951. Like a lot of Japanese utility vehicles of the time, it closely resembled a Jeep. Fast forward nearly 70 years and the only thing Nissan’s largest SUV shares with Jeep is off-road ability.  Almost two million Patrols have been sold across 150 countries, and the rugged SUV has maintained a reputation...

THERE’S no doubting that one of the best things about Nissan’s Y62 Patrol is its VK56 V8 engine. No matter what side of the petrol versus diesel debate you sit on, you can’t help but smile when you plant your boot in a Patrol to unleash the full 298kW of power and the big wagon roars towards the horizon. While the factory performance is bloody good, that doe...
