One that still divides onlookers today. Many are happy to sit on the fence and say that the 3 Wheeler is neither a car nor a motorcycle, even if technically falling into alignment with the latter. In the US, the 3 Wheeler was homologated as a motorcycle. On the other hand, the Australian version was classified as a car rather than a motorbike, and in turn that meant it also drew a levy on UK imports, as well as the Luxury Car Tax. The reason it was classified as a car in Australia is due to the fact that Morgan re-engineered the model from a 3-wheeled motorcycle to a 3-wheeled car, in accordance with Australian Design Rule (ADR) regulations.
Morgan rounded out the production of the 3 Wheeler in 2021 after regulatory changes concerning emissions in the EU, which brought an end to one of the most iconic and distinctive automobiles on the planet. Of course, there are a number of other niche manufacturers who make their own version of the 3 Wheeler, but the Morgan version is the tried and trusted name in this space. In what is good news, however, Morgan has unveiled plans for a Super 3 Wheeler, but we'll have to see whether it lands in Australia.
Naturally, there is typically some depreciation in the first few years of owning any car, and Morgan is no different. On top of that, Morgan stock is incredibly scarce, so resell values are supported, and some of the brand's classics actually go on to increase their value over time as collector units.
In a world where we regularly talk about cars generating power and emissions, comes a car which generates something different entirely. Conversation. Or more to the point, questions. Drive even a block from home in the 2017 Morgan 3 Wheeler, and someone is bound to ask, “what the hell is that thing?” A bathtub, trimmed in soft, caramel leather, that seems to...
