Not to be confused with its spruced-up and dearer Mitsubishi brother, the Pajero Sport hones the focus on off-road excellence and aims for an affordable price-point for each variant in the series. But price has never been a barrier for the Japanese manufacturer when setting the specifications for its cars. This Sport version makes a name for itself on account of its Triton base, which speaks for the undeniable build quality of the vehicle. With bonuses such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and eight-speed automatic transmission, none of which may be found on the more expensive Pajero, Mitsubishi is laying down the gauntlet to other competitors and signalling its intent to provide unrivalled value. One thing it does have in common with its older brother, is seating for up to seven occupants, and a dual-range selective 4WD system with the fall-back of rear-wheel drive. But again, there’s a small advantage at play, with 3.1 tonne towing capacity leading the field. A bold yet serene interior, decked out with contemporary finishes, complements sporty suspension and fluid movement. As a specialised off-roader, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is right up there as a category leader, representing tremendous value.

Furthermore, Mitsubishi also pointed towards the current trend in the new car market favouring crossover recreational SUVs as opposed to specialty 4x4 off-roaders. In its place, the Pajero Sport will continue to be manufactured. The iconic Mitsubishi Pajero will finally reach the end of the road next year, as the Japanese car giant embarks on an aggressive cost-cutting mission.
What is the difference between the Pajero and Pajero Sport?

Both the Mitsubishi Pajero and Pajero Sport are off-road 4x4 SUVs complete with dual-range functionality, although the Pajero is bigger in size and stature. The Pajero Sport has optimised and built upon the renowned framework and platform of the original, reducing the weight and improving the aerodynamics, which means that its 2.4-litre diesel engine is nearly as powerful as the 3.2-litre in the Pajero. Further to that, the Pajero Sport operates a slick eight-speed auto gearbox, offering a more fluid ride than the five-speed in the Pajero. The Pajero Sport runs smoother and quieter on road, while the Pajero is more firm and planted, becoming more dynamic off-road thanks to its fully independent suspension set-up. Rounding things out, the Pajero's bigger size makes for a more spacious cabin with far more legroom in the rear rows. Be quick though, the Pajero is soon to be phased out.
