Although no longer sold new in Australia, it is still worth reflecting on the quality of the MINI One, which to this day still fares particularly well against a number of other rivals on the market. The last versions of this snappy hatch were equipped with modern tech and a snazzy cabin complete with plush finishes and materials. MINI designed the One with a focus on an economical ride, and on that front, it does incredibly well.
While the Cooper continues in various formats to this day, and the MINI One is now sadly confined to the history books, comparing a like-for-like model year version of each car would tell you one thing. The Cooper is a far more powerful car than its sibling, which instead was built with a focus on efficiency and fuel economy. The model year 2017 version of the One featured a 1.2-litre turbo motor that offered just 75kW of power and 180Nm of torque, whereas certain variants in the Cooper range were double that.
The last version of the MINI One came with a three-cylinder 1.2-litre TwinPower turbo-petrol engine, or alternatively in some overseas markets, a 1.2-litre TwinPower turbo-diesel engine. That was equivalent to 102bhp or 95bhp respectively. In terms we use today, the petrol version offered in the vicinity of 75kW of power. Both engine variants included stop-start functionality, which was one of the key features helping MINI pitch the One towards new car buyers who were looking for an economical car to run, and those conscious of emissions.
