Mercedes-Benz phased out the SLK from 2016/17, and its successor, the SLC, from the end of 2019 after being produced across three generations and a 23-year lifespan. The original SLK was launched at the Paris motor show in 1996, with a second iteration following at the Geneva motor show in 2004. The German auto-maker released its third generation of the SLK in 2011. Although a popular roadster, Mercedes-Benz made the decision to discontinue the SLK and SLC follow-up amid falling sales and shrinking margins as SUVs gain more traction and favour among new car buyers.
To date, Mercedes-Benz hasn't announced or designated any specific vehicle as an official replacement for the now discontinued SLC roadster. The AMG GT is certainly one name that springs to mind, but it's in a very different category in terms of performance, and price! However, recent reports suggest the a new model dubbed the AMG SL may stand as a replacement for the SLC and certain S-Class convertibles. Stay tuned, there is plenty of action afoot!
The SLK and SLC were both one and the same for much of the last quarter of a century. In fact, the SLC was previously known as the SLK until a change in naming convention took place when the roadster was given a mid-generation refresh in 2016. From 2017, the Mercedes-Benz SLC replaced the SLK, and the brand phased out the SLK 350 and SLK 55 AMG variants, instead streamlining the SLC range via the SLC200, SLC300 and AMG SLC 43.
