One of the earlier iterations from Mercedes-Benz to mark its foray into plug-in hybrids, the C350e is beneficiary to a major revamp in 2019. The most prominent improvement is an increased fully-electric driving range, up from 30km to 50km. That might seem like a modest amount, however, it’s well placed with respect to luxury peers for practicality. Additionally, you only need to look at the revisions to the battery and electric motor to understand how useful this extra range is. Battery capacity is more than double at 13.5kWh and motor power is up around 50% from 60kW and 340Nm, to 90kW and 440Nm. Charging time is also significantly shorter thanks to the on-board charger doubling in capacity. And all that considers the electric side of the equation, when in fact, the turbo-petrol motor has been given a robust and dynamic tuning. With a series of driving modes to navigate through, buyers have a highly versatile and configurable car. Add to that the multi-link suspension setups and adaptive damping control, the C350e feels like it glides effortlessly. Other bonus features include active park assist, blind-spot monitoring, AEB with collision warning, driver fatigue detection, auto wipers and headlights, pedestrian detection and privacy glass. You should realise by now, this unit isn’t just a head turner, and the 2019 version has come leaps and bounds from its predecessor.
Mercedes-Benz no longer produces the C350, which was last available in 2019. Today, the German auto-maker offers a number of other vehicles in the C-Class range, including the likes of the C200, C300, C43 and C63 S, among others. Prices for the C-Class Mercedes-Benz kick off at $66,900 plus on-road costs, while the dearest C-Class model will set you back at least $194,000, and that is before on-road costs as well.
Like any other car produced by Mercedes-Benz, the C350 was and still very much is a reliable car. That will come as no surprise to diehard Mercedes-Benz fanatics, but even everyday motorists will know this German auto-maker has a reputation for delivering solid cars that are good to go round and round and still stand the test of time. Now that the C350 has been discontinued, the second-hand market is the only place to find one, but that shouldn't necessarily put you off as this unit can easily last 250,000 kilometres and then some, provided it has been well looked after.
Mercedes-Benz has produced no shortage of cars over the decades, but the C350 was a fine car that hit all the right notes. A marvellous unit, the C350 came in various body formats, configurations and set-ups, but regardless which variant you chose, the assurance was always there when it came to quality, comfort and performance. Although it is no longer being sold new across Australia, new car buyers can take confidence that the rest of the modern-day C-Class range are just as competent, and well worth a look.
