Mercedes-Benz B200
Last time you lay your eyes on the B-Class, you probably didn’t give it a second glance. Now, under this new 2019 edition, you’re more likely to be unable to take your eyes off it. The transformation is striking, such is the lively presentation of the B200 with a longer wheelbase, sleek rooftop and other elaborate details. At its heart is a 1.3L turbo-four mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and FWD setup. It’s a combination that works well in unison, offering an exuberant aura and having strong presence on the roads. It is also one frugal hatch, with fuel consumption a miserly 5.4L per 100km, putting it on par with some hybrid vehicles being sold today. Being well-specced in terms of performance is one thing, but the B200 also crows loads of kit, additional cabin room and extra boot space over its A-Class sibling to attract value-conscious buyers. Many will appreciate the supreme comfort on offer, with a swank interior enveloping and supporting occupants, and a softer suspension setup proving invaluable. Leading the safety suite is a comprehensive offering of nine airbags, although it’s so easy to overlook the active safety technology such is its understated brilliance. It’s not quite a hatch, nor an SUV, but for the best of both worlds, the B200 will be a source of joy for years to come.

But the more mundane, mainstream Giulia isn’t what the red-blooded Alfisti want to know about. They want...
