Striving to make an impact in the ever-growing SUV segment, LDV recently released a quartet of utes that are split between single cab and dual-cab chassis. While three of the variants are 4x4 equipped, there’s also the more affordable base model, which is a 4x2. Don’t let the budget price fool you however, the utes are stacked with equipment and features in a move that departs from the past perception of Chinese-built cars. It’s also one of the safer models to arrive down under, with many active safety aids and a five-star ANCAP safety rating. LDV has fitted a 4-cylinder 2.8L turbo diesel motor to each variant, comparable to some of those used by Holden and Jeep, with moderate power output that works harmoniously with a six-speed transmission. Ride comfort feels balanced on bitumen as well as light off-road conditions, thanks largely to independent double-wishbone front suspension, plus heavy-duty rear leaf springs. With the cabin feeling neat and tidy, plus sporting a large touchscreen system front and centre, the T60’s amenity is thoroughly pleasing. Who makes the LDV T60 engine?

LDV's latest engine, an efficient and optimised 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor dubbed the D20, is produced in-house by its large-scale parent company, SAIC Motor Corporation. Of the models that still feature a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine with 120kW and 360Nm of torque, this engine has been made under license from Italy’s VM Motori.
What motor is in the LDV T60?

Three of the variants in the LDV T60 line-up feature a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. This includes the Luxe (4x4), Mega TUB (4x4) and PRO (4x4) models. This motor is capable of producing 110kW of power at 3400 rpm, as well as 360Nm of torque at 1600-2800 rpm. In the range-topping Trailrider 2 (4x4) D20, a different single turbo-diesel motor is used, tweaked to pump out 120kW of power and 375Nm of torque. This new motor is expected to be deployed across the entire line-up in time.
