While it might have a number of fans who appreciate its rugged looks and off-road credentials, the Jeep Renegade has also polarised some owners in terms of reliability. In the US, the model has consistently lagged some of its peers for reliability when based on consumer reports. Electrical gremlins have been identified as one shortfall for the model, and engine issues, including random loss of power, stalling, and overheating have been cited as reliability concerns. Just keep in mind, lots of makes and models of cars encounter problems of their own, so the grass isn't always greener.
Sadly, the Jeep Renegade is no longer sold across the Australian new car market. This model was available for five years down under, however, in early 2020 Jeep announced that it would be discontinuing the compact Renegade SUV on the back of the weak Australian dollar. The company has left the door slightly open to the prospect of a revival for the Renegade in the future, but that may depend on whether the brand sees it as a commercially viable model.
Standard Renegade models come with front-wheel drive, whereas the top-spec Trailhawk variant comes with four-wheel drive. That means if you are looking at the Sport, Latitude and Limited models, you'll have to make do with front-wheel-drive, because unlike overseas models, where AWD was offered to new car buyers, these variants were only produced with FWD in Australia. On the other hand, the Trailhawk is a true 4x4, and it has all the mechanical underpinnings for off-road adventures.
