Following the 2017 model year, the Patriot was discontinued by Jeep due to lacklustre sales. However, in its place, Jeep launched a reinvigorated version of another compact SUV, dubbed the Compass. Whereas the Patriot was sold with either RWD or 4x4, the Compass is sold with either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. The Jeep Compass has great credentials when it comes to off-roading abilities, and in fact, it is right up there as a leader in its class for off-road readiness.
Even late in its life, the Jeep Patriot was still finding itself bogged down by reliability issues, although on the whole it was still a fairly dependable name. Some of the issues affecting the last run of units produced in the MY17 Patriot include transmission issues, engine problems, and electrical gremlins. Elaborating more on these gripes, the Patriot was often reported to be a little shaky when shifting into gear, and accelerating uphill sometimes proved a challenge due to a faulty transmission unit. Issues with the electrics include battery problems and brake light faults.
The Patriot was already facing a number of challenges from rivals, but quite simply, the car didn't sell as well as Jeep wanted it to. When you consider the fact that it lagged some of its peers in terms of uptake of technology, new car buyers were given more choice in alternative names on the market. Part of the decision to offer a more bare-bones offering may have been driven by price positioning, however, that ultimately didn't resonate with motorists.
