To understand why Jaguar discontinued the XJ, why not go directly to the company source. Following model year 2019, Jaguar conducted "a thorough technology review against the exponential change in the automotive industry, (and) we concluded that the planned XJ replacement does not fit with our vision for a reimaged Jaguar brand”. So on that note you can deduce that the brand is making a concerted effort to transition towards EVs.
Like many other auto-makers, Jaguar originally brought an abbreviation to this model to give it a bit more of a catchy title. As such, “XJ” is considered a code name for “eXperimental Jaguar”. This type of practice still goes on to this day, with car companies investing significant amounts of money into their marketing teams to come up with names that will stay on the tip of our tongues. Of course, this doesn't always go to plan, but there is usually more to a name than one might think.
There is very little separating these two models. The Jaguar XJ and XJL are in fact both part of the same model line-up. However, the “L” in the XJL represents a long wheelbase model that provides occupants with up to 4.8 inches of additional leg room in the second row. Outside of this key difference, the two models were available in what was effectively the same guise, providing of course you pick a like-for-like variant. With both the XJ and XJL no longer produced by Jaguar, the second-hand market is your only bet, so make sure you confirm which model you're looking at.
Is a long-wheelbase Jaguar XJ in flagship Autobiography guise objectively better than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or Porsche Panamera? No. But that's no reason not to buy one. It's all about branding, baby.
View ReviewAs a child, my parents - who aren't car people - would see a Jaguar and point. It didn't matter if it was an XJ, Daimler Double Six or a Mark II, there was a great deal of mystique around these bastions of Britishness. It also didn't matter that these weren't necessarily good cars. The Seventies and Eighties saw the brand slide into a funk while being passed...
View ReviewThe Jaguar XJ is one of the most storied of all British nameplates. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of the first XJ6, a gorgeous yet temperamental luxury saloon that became an icon. Yet as Jaguar Land Rover (JLR from here on in) has flourished under the hands-off stewardship of India's Tata Group, today's XJ limousine flagship has taken a back seat as...
