The latest generation of the Isuzu D-Max adds a new variant at the top of the range, with the X-Terrain developed to offer a bit more value going toe-to-toe with its better-known competitors in the Toyota HiLux and the Ford Ranger. This dual-cab offering has come leaps and bounds from just a short time ago, with the range now feeling more polished on the road, and a great deal of amenity available thanks to a generous equipment list and the inclusion of advanced safety. From a design perspective, the MY21 D-Max is a gorgeous looking ute, especially from side-on where you can appreciate its aggressive profile. There are three engine configurations available across the range, but it’s hard to go past the four-cylinder, 3.0-litre turbo-diesel that puts out 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque, which feels solid at the low and mid-range for towing and off-road performance. A six-speed transmission may be light-on, and the absence of a limited-slip differential is worth pointing out, but for an on-road ute, the D-Max sets very high standards. If you are looking for an off-road fighter you may wish to consider some of the other 4x4 dual-cabs on sale, but this unit is a workhorse that is well worth a closer look.
